The Light Rapid Transit 3 (LRT3) project, which covers about 37 KM from Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, to Klang, will now cost RM21.93 billion. Said costs includes the reinstatement of five key stations: Tropicana, Raja Muda, Temasya, Bukit Raja, and Botanic City.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah noted that the project was originally approved in 2015 at a cost of RM31.65 billion. However, in 2018, it was delayed due to cost-cutting measures, even though nearly 90% of the work was completed.

“The revised project cost, after reducing its scope, stood at RM16.63 billion, with an additional RM5.3 billion needed to reinstate the five stations. This is a potential saving of RM9.72 billion compared to the initial amount approved in 2015,” said Hasbi in response to Azahari Hasan (Pakatan Nasional-Padang Rengas) in Dewan Rakyat.

He however also added that the reinstatement of these stations is pending approval and funding from the Finance Ministry and the Economic Ministry.

Currently, Prasarana Malaysia Bhd is working on finalising the technical aspects, including the design of the stations and a new financial agreement. The design phase is expected to be completed by early next year, and construction is targeted to begin by the end of 2025.

“Construction of the five stations is expected to wrap up by the fourth quarter of 2027, with operations set to commence by the second quarter of 2028,” Hasbi added.
