The new third-gen Audi A5 liftback and 'Avant' estate gains new e-hybrid quattro variants featuring electrified plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains under their hoods.

The new third-generation Audi A5 liftback and ‘Avant’ estate duo sees its variant line expanded further as the Ingolstadt-rooted luxury marque announced new e-hybrid quattro plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants for which this week.

Set for market arrival starting June this year, these new additions see their EA888 2.0-litre 4-cyl turbo petrol mills get augmented by an e-motor and 25.9 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the latter offering up to 110 KM of electric-only range, touts the four-ringed marque.

The PHEV powertrain centres around a 2.0-litre 4-cyl turbo petrol mill with two (combined) power output options  available - 295 HP and 362 HP.

Audi have readied two (combined) output levels starting with a ‘base’ 295 HP version, followed by a peppier 362 HP choice that matches the V6-powered S5 model slotted above. All are exclusively paired with the marque’s quattro all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup too.

In terms of performance, the 295 HP version does 0-100 KM/H sprints in just 5.9 secs, whilst the 362 HP version does the same in a quicker 5.1 secs instead. Both also share the same electric-only V-Max of 140 KM/H and an electronically-capped V-Max of 250 KM/H.

Primed with a 25.9 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the PHEV powertrain promises an electric-only V-max of 140 KM/H and range of 110 KM. It also boasts an 11 kW AC on-board charger promising full re-charges in 2.5 hours.

Besides regenerative braking with selectable levels toggled via steering-mounted paddle-shifters, the battery pack mentioned also comes with an 11 kW AC on-board charger. The latter sees 0-100% re-charges attained in about 2.5 hours.

Apart from the electrified plug-in hybrid setup, everything else on board seems to mirror what’s seen in the non-PHEV variants that debuted in July last year. As a refresher, the new A5 not only succeeds its same-named predecessor, it also replaces the A4 model too.

Everything else on board appears to mirror the non-PHEV A5 models detailed prior.

Moreover, an even more powerful PHEV version is almost certainly set to arrive either later this year or sometime in 2026. Aptly, this will serve as a direct replacement to the RS4 Avant performance estate model and go directly against the BMW M3 Touring.
