Malaysian-Bound Chery Tiggo 4 Pro Secures 5-Star ANCAP Rating

The Malaysian-bound Chery Tiggo 4 Pro compact SUV has received a five-star score for the ANCAP safety rating.
Ahead of its much-anticipated local debut, the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro has been awarded a five-star rating by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). What’s interesting about the Tiggo 4 Pro’s ANCAP crash test is that the small SUV was not being crash tested locally, where its result is instead being based on physical crash test results from its “closely related partner model,” the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro.

As such, both the Tiggo 4 Pro small SUV and Tiggo 7 Pro mid-size SUV share identical adult and child occupant protections (AOP & COP) tests with 88% and 87% scores, respectively. Despite both models sharing the same T1X platform, the Tiggo 4 Pro is noticeably smaller and shorter than the Tiggo 7 Pro, while using a smaller 1.5-litre 4-cyl turbocharged engine as opposed to the 1.6-litre TGDi unit primed on the latter.

However, despite the differences, both the Tiggo 4’s tests are in line with guidelines outlined by ANCAP, thus explaining the five-star score garnered to it by the governing body. On top of that, the Tiggo 4 Pro also meets other criteria, such as similar front seat belt anchorage points, the same number of side doors, and comparable engine block size.
“A partner model may not share the original rating if it is released in a calendar year more than two years later than the date stamp of the original assessment,” according to the ANCAP documentation.
More on the Tiggo 4 Pro’s ‘crash test’ result, besides the aforementioned AOP and COP tests, the Wuhu-born small SUV also scored a decent 79% for the pedestrian protection test, which is 1% lower than the Tiggo 7 Pro’s score due to poorer pedestrian detection in the obstructed child running onto the road (day and night) scenario.

While ANCAP didn’t outright perform a crash test on the Tiggo 4 Pro, the governing body did conduct its own advanced safety system tests for the model, which yielded an 85% score. In comparison, the Tiggo 7 Pro scored slightly better at 86% for this test.
While the Tiggo 4 Pro’s 5-star score sounds decent, ANCAP did note that this result is only applicable to models built after Nov 2024, with earlier cars subject to a recall to update their autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system in Australia. It is also explicitly stated that models tested by ANCAP had had this issue amended.

More importantly, the 5-star ANCAP crash test result for the Tiggo 4 Pro also marks a perfect 5-star score streak for the Wuhu-based automaker, with its previously tested models like the Tiggo 7 Pro, Tiggo 8 Pro Max, and the Omoda E5 all being awarded 5-star ratings by the governing body.

Facelifted Chery Tiggo 4 Pro (also known as the Chery Tiggo Cross) previewed in China last year.
Previewed during last year’s Chery International Business Summit, the facelifted Chery Tiggo 4 Pro was initially touted for a Q4 2024 debut before further delays. With the model already debuting in neighbouring Indonesia as the Chery Tiggo Cross, we can expect this small SUV to make its local debut very soon.
