Major Brands Skip Shanghai Auto Show Due To Market Woes, EV shift

At this week's Shanghai Auto Show, leading manufacturers showcased their latest models designed specifically for the Chinese market. They are striving to maintain competitiveness within the world's largest automotive market while navigating potential impacts from U.S. President Donald Trump's trade policies.

Intense competition and the rapid transition in consumer demand towards electric vehicles (EVs) are exerting pressure on established players within the global automotive industry.
This is evidenced by the notable absence of at least 15 major automakers, which unexpectedly included Chinese EV startups such as Hozon Auto and Jiyue, alongside prominent international brands like Hyundai and Lamborghini.
The world's premier showcase also sees absences from active carmakers in the market, including Kia, Rolls-Royce, Lorinser, Dayun, Genesis, Jaguar Land Rover, Rising, Polester, Durant Guild, and Chevrolet, indicating that industry players are wary of how the US-China trade war will affect demand.

This also implies that these companies might be experiencing a sales decline in China or facing financial constraints, despite the hype surrounding the industry.
The auto show in China, with over 70 carmakers from 26 countries participating, is seen by industry analysts as a key indicator of brand presence and market trends. The event showcased the latest EV technologies, including swappable batteries and AI-powered features, and drew an estimated 1 million visitors.
Data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) shows that China's car production now accounts for over 30% of global output, with mainland consumers buying more than 60% of EVs sold worldwide.
