MOT Reviewing Platform Screen Doors For LRT Following Blind Passenger’s Death
The Transport Ministry (MOT) is reviewing whether to install Platform Automatic Gate Systems (PAGS) at LRT stations on the Kelana Jaya and Ampang lines, following a tragic incident earlier this year involving a blind commuter.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah said the move comes after a visually impaired passenger fell onto the tracks at Titiwangsa station on February 22 and was fatally struck by a train.
"To ensure such incidents involving PwD passengers at Titiwangsa LRT station do not recur, Prasarana is conducting a feasibility study on implementing the Platform Automatic Gate System at Kelana Jaya Line and Ampang Line LRT stations," Hasbi told the Dewan Negara on Tuesday.
He was responding to Senator Tuan D.J. Isaiah, who had asked about MOT’s efforts to improve safety for persons with disabilities (PwDs).
Hasbi noted that while the study is ongoing, several immediate measures will be rolled out.
"These include deploying more auxiliary police at stations, upgrading disabled-friendly facilities such as replacing ageing lifts, and improving signage and access routes to make navigation easier for PwD passengers," he added.
The gates, which are already in place at KL Sentral and Tun Sambanthan, are designed to open and close in sync with train doors. They also come equipped with three emergency exit doors and fixed safety screens at both ends of the platform.
