Proton e.MAS 7

Months after its debut, the national brand’s sought-after and first Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) offering, the Proton e.MAS 7, upgraded and launched in Malaysia.

A C-segment e-SUV, it underpins the Global Modular Architecture (GMA) platform and is based on the Geely Galaxy E5 model (China market).

Fully-imported (CBU – China), available via Pro-Net (Proton EV distributor) are two variants (e.MAS 7 Prime – MYR 109,800, e.MAS 7 Premium – MYR 123,800). 

Prices (OTR, w/o insurance) cover a vehicle warranty (six years, unlimited mileage) and an EV battery/parts warranty (eight years/160,000 KM).

Extended e.MAS 7 ‘Welcome Benefit’ (MYR 4,000 rebate on original price – MYR 105,800, MYR 119,800). 

Power Pack+ launch package (free 7 KW home charger – MYR 1,500, free V2L adaptor – MYR 500, free five years unlimited internet data – MYR 1,800, trade-in rebate – MYR 5,000).

Six (single-tone) exterior colours (Lithium White, Turquoise Green, Slate Grey, Platinum Silver, Quartz Rose, Obsidian Black). One (dual-tone) interior colour (Black-Indigo Blue).

Minimalistic, the e.MAS 7 gets a tiered dashboard design, linked to a high-rising-wide-floating centre console (wireless charger, under-stowage).

Soft-/hard-touched (dash, steering wheel, centre console, doors), it sees one dual-tone (Black-Indigo Blue) colour scheme with contrast trims (Silver).

Filling-up the spaces are floating central/driver displays (infotainment/instrument cluster), slit-like air-conditioning vents and ambient lights (256-colour – Premium).

Inclusively, the design layout is airy and non-cluttered, with accessibilities arranged ergonomically (driver-centric, user-friendly).

Mounted is a floating 10.2-Inch LCD digital driver display (instrument cluster) with a 13.8-Inch colour windscreen-Head-Up Display (w-HUD – Premium).

Comfortable, the interior sees leatherette (Prime, Premium) upholstery in a dual-tone (Black-Indigo Blue) colour scheme.

Variant Prime, the front gets electric-powered (driver-six-way) and manual-operated (passenger-multi-way) bolstered seats. The rear gets a manual-operated (two-step recline, 60:40 split-flat-fold) bolstered bench seat.

Variant Premium, the front gets electric-powered (driver-six-way, passenger-four-way, driver-memory, ventilation, full-recline) bolstered seats. The rear gets a manual-operated (two-step recline, 60:40 split-flat-fold) bolstered bench seat.

Included are armrests (front – centre console, rear – centre seat fold-out), a panoramic glass sunroof (electric: slide/tilt, sunshade – Premium) and a tonneau cover.

A five-seater e-SUV, the cabin offers generous space, providing comfortable seatings for the occupants (front, rear) with ample interior mobility.

Mounted is a two-spoke-flat-bottom steering wheel (leather, anti-bacterial) in a single-tone colour scheme (Black) with contrast trims (Silver).

Features are multi-function buttons (media, voice assistant, Bluetooth, ACC – Adaptive Cruise Control), column gear shifter (gear lever – right stalk) and column adjustments (tilt, telescopic).

Aiding the drive is an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system.

Practical storage areas available. E.g., centre console caverned/partitioned/under-stowage spaces, glove box, under seat storage (rear) and seat back/side door pockets.

Provided are four cup holders (two – front, rear) and four bottle holders (one – side doors).

Installed are one 12 V power socket (front), four USB ports (two – front, rear) and one wireless charger (front).

Included is a Vehicle-To-Load (V2L – 3.3 KW) function for powering of external appliances. 

Accessing its electric-tailgate (Premium – one-touch open/close, remote/key fob), opens to 461-Litres (rear seats up) and 1,877-Litres (rear seats down) of load capacities. 

Included is an under-boot storage (51-Litres) and a tonneau cover.

Weighing in at 1,662 KG (Prime) and 1,765 KG (Premium), the e.MAS 7 stands at 4,615 MM in length, 1,901 MM in width, 1,670 MM in height and with a wheelbase spanning 2,750 MM.

Sportily sleek, it parades Proton’s ‘Universal Design’ aesthetics, emphasising smoothly shaped contours and cleanly cut lines.

The front-end sees rounded bonnet/quarter panels and a rounded-bumper (Active Grille Shutter: AGS – Premium, corner vents, Proton emblem).

Accentuations, body trims (Black: bumper corners, side mirror arms – Chrome: side window surrounds), body clad (Black: bumper, fenders, side sills), roof rails (Grey) and Proton emblem (Black-Chrome).

Borderline bulbous, it continues the design language, emphasising symmetrically flowing surfaces and seamlessly cut lines.

The rear-end sees a mildly dipped roofline (roof-edge spoiler), a roundly upright tailgate (Proton/e.MAS 7 scripts) and a rounded-bumper (under-guard, exhaustless).

Accentuations are body trims (Black: under-spoiler – Chrome: side window surrounds), body clad (Black: bumper, fenders, side sills), roof rails (Grey) and Proton script/e.MAS 7 scripts (Chrome).

Angularly sleek, the head lamps are housed slim and inward-tilted. Installed are full LED units. 

Features are Daytime Running Lights (DRL – LED), automatic On/Off, Intelligent High-beam Control (IHB), follow-me-home lights and sequential turn signals (LED).

Seamlessly minimalistic, the three-dimensional (3D) tail lamps are framed in a lightbar design (full width). Installed are full LED units.

The side mirrors (dual-tone – body-colour-Black) are electric-powered (auto-fold, adjust) with turn-signals, blind spot-indicators (Blind Spot Monitor – BSM) and heating.

Fitted are ventilated (front) and solid (rear) disc brakes. 

Drive is aided by an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold and brake energy recovery (regeneration) systems.

Variant-specific, fitted are 18-Inch (Prime) and 19-Inch (Premium) alloy rims (dual-tone – Black-Silver), wrapped in 225/55 R18 (Prime – front, rear) and 235/50 R19 (Premium – front, rear) Giti Comfort SUV 520/Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance SUV (Prime/Premium) tyres.

The e.MAS 7 (Prime, Premium) features the following set of Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS).

Installed is a floating 15.4-Inch touchscreen central display (infotainment).

The system runs on Geely’s Flyme Auto Operating System (FAuto OS – 7 nm Automotive-Grade Chip), supporting 4G/WiFi, voice control (two-zone), online navigation, live charging map, smartphone connection (Apple CarPlay – wireless), app store (Zoom, izi. Travel, Vivaldi), Proton e.MAS app (vehicle status, remote control, scheduled trip, scheduled charging) and Over-The-Air (OTA) updates.

Entertainment is channelled via a standard system (six speakers – Prime) and Flyme Sound Wanos surround sound system (16 speakers – Premium). 

The e.MAS 7 surges with a single (front-mounted) electric motor (12-In-1 Integrated Motor) setup, generating 160 KW (215 HP) and 320 NM. 

Churning the setup is a single-speed automatic transmission.

Power is transmitted to the front wheels, via a Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) system.

0 to 100 KM/H acceleration is done in 6.9 seconds (Prime) and 7.1 seconds (Premium). Top speed is 175 KM/H (Prime, Premium).

The e-motor is juiced-up by Geely’s AEGIS Short Blade battery (Lithium-Ion: Lithium Iron Phosphate – LFP) with variant-specific outputs (49.52 KWH – Prime, 60.22 KWH – Premium), enabling 345 KM (Prime) and 410 KM (Premium) of driving range (WLTP).

AC charging (11 KW – Type 2) takes 4.9 hours (Prime) and 6.1 hours (Premium) for a 10% to 100% State of Charge (SoC). 

DC charging (80 KW: Prime/100 KW: Premium – CCS2) takes 20 minutes for a 30% to 80% SoC.

Included is a Vehicle-To-Load (V2L – 3.3 KW) function for powering of external appliances.

Installed is a single-zone automatic air-conditioning (rear-vents, N95 air-filter) system.

Ride comfortability feels flexible and firm at the same time. The e-SUV delivers a comfortable and light steering feel, smooth overall electric performance at all speeds.

Propping-up the chassis (Prime, Premium) is a suspension setup of MacPherson strut (front) and multi-link (rear). 

Good sound insulation with most of the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) aspects accounted for. The ride is quiet, refined and the road noise is mostly muted.

The Proton e.MAS 7 exudes a sleek and energy-filled outlook. Its smooth and seamless silhouette is simply electrifying.

Interior-wise, its innovative layout with elements of advanced sophistication, gives a sense of airiness and easy connectivity to the occupants inside.

Ultimately, inside and out the build quality is satisfying, and being the first national BEV, the e.MAS 7 is truly a contender in its segment.
