Next-Gen Triton Will Get New Chassis & Updated Turbodiesel Mill
Sixth-gen Mitsubishi Triton will make its global debut this month!
It is no secret that the Mitsubishi Triton is getting a next-gen redux, with several teaser images and videos already being published that showcased a glimpse of the new truck. However, Mitsubishi is not finished peppering us with teasers and previews, this time unveiling the chassis and powertrain specs of the new truck ahead of its end-of-July debut.
The next-gen Triton will underpin a new ladder-frame chassis
According to Mitsubishi, the sixth-gen Triton pick-up truck will underpin a whole new ladder-frame chassis that features double-wishbone damper setup for the front axle, while the rear gets leaf springs instead. While the damper setup is the same used on the current-gen Triton, the automaker claims the newly-developed chassis will provide better driving dynamics and improved rigidity, while the suspension setup is “newly designed”.
This revelation is somewhat not a big surprise, as previous rumour suggests that the new Triton will share the same underpinnings as the Nissan Navara pick-up truck. Should this be true, then the new Triton will grow slightly in size compared to the previous model, as the Navara boasts a slightly longer wheelbase of 3,150 MM compared to the 3,000 MM on the current-gen Triton.
The new Triton will employ the new 4N16 turbodiesel engine
As for the powertrain, Mitsubishi announced that the new Triton will employ a “newly-developed” turbodiesel engine. Codenamed 4N16, this new and updated powertrain will replace the ongoing 4N15 engine used on the current Triton. As for the displacement size, the new 4N16 engine will have a smaller displacement of 2,439 CC compared to the 4N15’s 2,442 CC capacity, which is capable of delivering 178 HP and 430 NM.
The new 4N16 engine is the same engine used in the Nissan Caravan. On the Caravan panel van, however, said mill is only tuned to deliver 130 HP and 370 NM, although we suspect the new Triton will get a peppier state-of-tune. Another notable difference for the Caravan is that said mill is mated to a Jatco-sourced seven-speed automatic gearbox, while the ongoing Triton sports a six-speed auto instead.
The sixth-gen 2023 Mitsubishi Triton is slated to make its global debut later in July 26 this year, taking place at the world’s pick-up truck capital, Thailand. Only by then we’ll get to see the new Triton is its truest form, with no shadowy editing or camouflage wrapping to hide things up.
