One example of the Xiaomi SU7 in its native home market of China. The model stands as the debut first EV offering from the leading Chinese tech and electronics giant.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock this whole time, you’d know by now that leading Chinese electronics and tech giants Xiaomi recently ventured into the electric vehicles (EVs) space. In fact, during its market debut, the Xiaomi SU7 EV saloon garnered over 50,000 bookings in under 30 minutes!
Such is the appeal of the brand’s first EV that, naturally, for its latest brand roadshow held this week at the Centre Court of the Suria KLCC shopping haven, Xiaomi’s Malaysian arm elected to have one unit of the SU7 on display here. Suffice to say, the fanfare for its appearance is palpable.
We managed to get an up close look at it in the flesh earlier today, thus explaining the gallery of images provided here. Of course, besides these pretty pictures, we’re also here to tell you a few thing you might already know, and other things you might not have known, about it.
Yes, you read that right. Xiaomi's Malaysian arm has brought one unit of the SU7 for display here in Malaysia, but the bad news here is that you CANNOT buy it... At least not right now.
We’ll break the bad news first, that being the fact that Xiaomi has no intent to offer the SU7 model for sale in the local EV market. Instead, the Xiaomi SU7 is merely standing in as a centrepiece in the brand’s tech showcase – a lot like what Tesla did with the Cybertruck here not too long ago.
We'll also add that for now, the model is only available in its home market of China where demand for surpassed initial expectations. This perhaps explains why Xiaomi hasn't pursued overseas exports, let alone develop a right-hand-drive (RHD) version for it too.
Instead, the Xiaomi SU7 is part of the Xiaomi Human x Car x Home ecosystem showcase for its latest 14T Series smartphone. This showcase and display is set to run all this week at Suria KLCC’s Centre Court until Sunday, Oct 20 – you have until then to clap eyes on this EV in the flesh.
We won’t get into detail about how the SU7 is being integrated with Xiaomi’s range of products like its new 14T Series smartphone mentioned. Instead, we’ll refresh your memory about the its tech specs and performance capabilities, which are astounding to say the least.
On display in the Centre Court of Suria KLCC this week, the Xiaomi SU7 Max variant stands as a performance-flavoured range-topper from the model's line-up.
Designed by renowned ex-BMW design boss Chris Bangle, Xiaomi markets the SU7 in China across three variants – base, Pro and Max guises. Displayed locally is the range-topping Max variant dressed in a tasty shade of blue and packing a peppy dual-motor, AWD setup underneath.
Said driveline outputs roughly 664 HP and 838 NM in all, thus allowing 0-100 KM/H dashes in just 2.78 seconds – it’s quicker than the Tesla Models S and pre-facelift Porsche Taycan Turbo, in fact. Juicing said driveline is a CATL-sourced NMC-type battery pack with a capacity of 101 kWh.
Of course, this much speed comes as the price of range, thus explaining why this range-topping Max guise has a maximum range far lower than the mid-specced Pro variant’s claimed 800 KM figure. Given that this is a performance-flavoured range-topper, this comes as no surprise.
On board, the cabin of the Xiaomi SU7 Max stands arguably comparable to things like the Tesla Model S.
Elsewhere, the Xiaomi SU7 Max boasts air suspension with adaptive dampers, active shutter grille with 16 adjustable levels, as well as an active rear spoiler with four adjustment levels. Additionally, it also packs the Xiaomi Pilot ADAS package powered by two Nvidia Drive ORIN SOC chips.
You can find out more about the Xiaomi SU7 in our past debut report detailing which by clicking on these blue words. You can also check out its more powerful and radical Xiaomi SU7 Ultra that packs a manic 1,526 HP tri-motor setup by clicking here instead.
In the meantime, what do you folks reckon? Would this be your choice EV over its rivals mentioned had Xiaomi decided to offer it officially? Share your take in the comments below, as well as our social media pages…
