LRT3 Will Begin Operations On Sept 30 - Loke
Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced in a parliamentary reply on Wednesday that the Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) is scheduled to start operating on September 30 this year.
The 37.8km line connecting Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya to Johan Setia, Klang, is currently 98.63% complete and expected to be fully completed and handed over to Prasarana Malaysia Bhd by the turnkey contractor by July 31.
In response to Azli Yusof's (Pakatan Harapan-Shah Alam) inquiry about the LRT3 project's current status, including the trial run and expected full operation date, Loke stated that the trial run without passengers will be conducted in two phases to ensure the safety of the LRT3 service.
According to the minister, the first phase, which will be carried out by the principal contractor, Setia Utama LRT3 Sdn Bhd, will include 75 days of trial run (TR) and fault free run (FFR) from mid-April to late-June 2025. During this period, the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) will assess the system's safety, compliance, and reliability.
Loke also noted that Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd will conduct a 60-day trial operation under the second phase with technical support from the main contractor. The trial operation, which will run from July to August 2025, will begin after the completion and approval of TR and FFR by APAD.
The LRT3 project, initially planned with 26 stations and a budget of RM9 billion, saw its cost escalate to RM31.7 billion. In 2018, the Pakatan Harapan administration deferred five stations and cancelled one, reducing the cost to RM16.63 billion. However, in 2024, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced the reinstatement of the five shelved stations at an additional cost of RM4.7 billion.
