The Kia K4 Hatchback Is The VW Golf Rival That We Won’t Get

Making its first public debut at the ongoing New York International Auto Show is the all-new Kia K4 Hatchback.
As one of the globe’s most recognised car brands, Kia surely has a lot of models, but unfortunately not all of them are coming here. Among the many cool Kias that won’t be making their way into our local market is the new Kia K4 Hatchback, which is just fresh from making its global debut at the ongoing 2025 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS).
Previewed in its pre-production form last year, the new K4 Hatchback is essentially a much sportier version of the already sporty K4 sedan. As in many other sedan-derived hatchbacks, the K4 Hatchback looks the same as its saloon twin on the front half, featuring Kia’s new 'Opposites United' design ethos created by its design boss, Karim Habib.
Beyond the B-pillars are where things get more interesting, as the hatch gets hidden rear door handles to give it a three-door hatchback vibe of the past. Around back, the K4 Hatchback looks objectively sportier than the sedan, thanks to its hatch bodystyle with aggressive rear bumper accents and a roof-mounted spoiler, while featuring the same L-shaped LED taillight design.
The nip-tuck job done to the K4 Hatchback not only makes it look cooler than the sedan but also significantly shorter at 279 MM for the standard model and 269 MM for the sportier GT-Line variant. Kia claims the shorter overall length is not just for aesthetic purposes, as it also improves the manoeuvrability of this sporty hatch.
Once we get inside, things aren’t that drastically different from the K4 sedan, as the hatchback gets the same digital cockpit setup featuring a dual-screen setup, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and several physical buttons and multiple controls for the climate and infotainment. Buyers can also opt for a special Harman Kardon premium audio system, as well as several cabin colour options.
Despite its smaller stature, the K4 Hatchback is actually the more practical option of the two, as it gets a larger 629-litre boot space as opposed to the sedan’s 413-litre boot. Folding down the rear seats will expand the boot to over 1,679 litres, thus making this sporty hatch as practical as some of its SUV siblings.
In the US, the new Kia K4 Hatchback will get two powertrain flavours. The lineup starts with the baseline variant, which uses the same 2.0-litre 4-cyl nat-asp SmartStream engine as the Kia Sportage SUV. Completing the setup is an Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT), which is Kia’s lingo for a CVT gearbox that helps to send power to the front wheels (FWD).
Those seeking a sportier performance to match its good looks can opt for the top-spec GT-Line Turbo variant, which adopts a 1.6-litre 4-cyl SmartStream turbocharged petrol engine from the Sportage. In the K4 Hatchback’s application, however, this four-pot mill puts out 190 HP and 264 NM, while an eight-speed automatic transmission helps to send the power to the front wheels (FWD).
The all-new Kia K4 Hatchback will be making its way to the US market sometime later this year, and there’s no indication of which overseas market it will be heading to next. One thing’s for sure, the K4 hatch would definitely make a good contender to our not-so-popular local hatchback segment, which currently includes models like the Volkswagen Golf and Mazda3 Liftback, to name a few.
