Omoda | Jaecoo SHS Tech Buoyed By China’s PHEV Boom

Omoda | Jaecoo used its recent PHEV Tech Talk livestream to outline how it plans to lead in the fast-growing plug-in hybrid market. The session was hosted by Peter Guo, Brand Manager for China, Remy Wu, Product Manager for China and Mohamad Faiz Bin Bahruddin, Product Manager for Malaysia.
Data presented showed how PHEVs have surged from just 1.1% of China’s passenger car sales in 2019 to 18.9% in 2024. That is more than five million units sold last year, reflecting growing demand for electrified driving without the limitations of a pure EV.

The presenters further outlined that many older PHEVs were little more than petrol vehicles with electric motors added. These work well with a full battery but consume more fuel, shift gears less smoothly and produce more engine noise when the battery runs low.

Additionally, instead of using the more common Atkinson Cycle engine, Omoda | Jaecoo is adopting a Deep Miller Cycle engine paired with a dedicated hybrid platform. This setup offers higher efficiency, smoother power delivery, and quieter running even in charge-sustaining mode.

The J7 PHEV is already proving the point. In late 2024, it was mostly sold with a petrol engine. By June 2025, the Super Hybrid System (SHS) PHEV offering had jumped from just over a thousand units in Dec to more than 5,800 units, showing strong acceptance from buyers.

The same technology will be used in the upcoming Omoda C9 PHEV which is set to be previewed at the upcoming Omoda | Jaecoo Carnival in Desa ParkCity. This new flagship will combine premium features with the efficiency and refinement of the brand’s next-generation SHS technology.

The Omoda C9 PHEV will push potentials even further. It pairs a 1.5-litre turbo engine with dual electric motors for 610 HP and 920 Nm, backed by a 34.46 kWh LFP battery from CATL warranting an EV-only range of up to 150 KM, with a total driving range of 1,100 KM.

With China’s PHEV market growing at record pace, the scale and innovation it drives are speeding global development. Buyers worldwide, including in Malaysia, will enjoy the same advanced hybrid systems, lower costs and long-range flexibility proven successful in China.
