The Chery Omoda E5 is the fully electric derivative of the Omoda 5 compact SUV and was introduced in Malaysia in March 2024.

Only one variant is offered, powered by a single front-mounted electric motor producing 150 KW (201 HP) and 340 NM, paired with a 61 KWH LFP battery. It delivers up to 430 KM WLTP range.

Following the implementation of EV road tax from January 2026, the current official Peninsular Malaysia on-the-road price without insurance stands at RM146,978 for private individual registration.

The cabin is dominated by a wide 24.6-INCH curved dual-screen arrangement.

This combines a 12.3-INCH digital instrument cluster and 12.3-INCH central infotainment display beneath one continuous glass panel.

Soft-touch dashboard materials, wood-style trim and multi-colour ambient lighting give the cabin a more premium appearance than its price point might suggest.

The centre console provides storage, cup holders and a 50 W wireless smartphone charger with active cooling.

A column-mounted electronic gear selector frees up additional space between the front occupants.

The centre armrest also incorporates a cooled storage compartment.

The E5 is equipped with Chery’s comprehensive ADAS 2.5 suite.

Functions include Adaptive Cruise Control, Integrated Cruise Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Departure Prevention.

A Driver Monitoring System detects signs of fatigue or distraction and can trigger visual, audible and cabin-based alerts.

Audio is delivered through an eight-speaker Sony sound system.

The branded system provides a notably more premium audio setup than typically expected from an EV at this price level.

Being fully electric, the Omoda E5 replaces a combustion engine with a front-mounted electric motor.

Maximum output is 150 KW (201 HP) and 340 NM.

DC fast charging reaches 80 KW, allowing the battery to recharge from 30-80% in approximately 28 minutes under suitable conditions.

The E5 also provides 3.3 KW V2L, allowing its high-voltage battery to power compatible external appliances.

Standard convenience equipment includes keyless entry, automatic vehicle start, powered tailgate, powered sunroof and one-touch electric windows with anti-pinch protection.

Automatic wipers, automatic headlamps and a 50 W cooled wireless charger are also provided.

Welcome Mode automatically unlocks the vehicle and unfolds the exterior mirrors as the driver approaches.

The Omoda E5 features dual-zone automatic climate control with dedicated second-row air vents.

A PM2.5 filtration system helps maintain cabin air quality.

Cool Mode can simultaneously reduce cabin temperature and activate the ventilated front seats during hot weather.

The E5 uses MacPherson strut front suspension and a multi-link independent rear suspension.

The multi-link rear arrangement provides better wheel control than a simpler torsion-beam setup and helps give the E5 a relatively composed ride.

Its suspension calibration prioritises daily comfort rather than outright sporting behaviour.

The electric drivetrain eliminates conventional engine noise and vibration during operation.

The Chery Omoda E5 remains a well-equipped compact electric SUV despite newer EV rivals entering the Malaysian market.

Its 201 HP and 340 NM motor provides respectable performance, while the 61 KWH LFP battery and 430 KM WLTP range remain sufficient for most daily and intercity driving.

Equipment is particularly strong, with ventilated powered front seats, dual 12.3-inch displays, Sony audio, powered sunroof and tailgate, 540-degree camera and a comprehensive ADAS 2.5 suite all included as standard.

Its main weakness is charging speed. The 80 KW DC maximum now trails many newer competitors capable of 100 KW, 150 KW or substantially more.

Nevertheless, with its current RM146,978 OTR price without insurance, extensive standard equipment, locally assembled status and 3.3 KW V2L capability, the Omoda E5 continues to offer a competitive combination of practicality, technology and value.
