Chery Omoda E5

A counterpart to its petrol-infused twin, Chery Malaysia’s all-new contender, the Omoda E5, an all-electric SUV.

Underpinned in its chassis is Chery’s T1X platform (akin to Omoda 5), and BYD’s Blade Battery Technology.

The single variant offered is fully-imported (CBU) from China (local assembly (CKD) second batch onwards), and the new B-segment e-SUV tags at MYR 146,800 (OTR, w/o insurance).

Price includes a seven-year/150,000 KM vehicle warranty, an eight-year/160,000 KM battery warranty (1-to-1 battery replacement - <70%), and an eight-year/160,000 KM drive unit warranty. 

First 2,000 units. Complimentary wallbox charger (11 KW), V2L adapter, and MYR 1,000 EV charging credit (EVC - Gentari, ChargeEV).

Four exterior colours (Aqua Green, Khaki White, Phantom Grey, Dark Black). Two interior colours (Blue-Beige (two-tone), All-Black).

The all-new Omoda E5 has a modern and multi-tiered dashboard. A clean and airy layout, accentuated by a multi-colour ambient lighting system.

Draped in soft-touch panels (two-tone - blue-beige) and wood veneers, centre-staged is a curved-twin-screen setup (instrument cluster, infotainment - 24.6-Inch).

Linked to the dash is a gear-lever-deleted centre console, featuring a touch panel (air-conditioning controls), and a centre console storage with a cooling system.

Overall, the cockpit is well designed with the equipment purposefully arranged, driver-centric, and user-friendly.

One half of a curved-twin setup, installed is a 12.3-Inch fully-digital instrument cluster.

High-quality and comfortable, the five-seater’s interior is in faux leather upholstery with two colour options. Two-tone (blue-beige) and all-black.

Fitted are electronically-powered front seats (six-way driver/four-way passenger, ventilation) with a centre armrest (centre console storage - cooling system). 

The rear gets a bench (60:40 split-fold), and completing the layout is a panoramic glass sunroof (auto - slide/tilt), framed by a colour-matching headliner.

Courtesy of Chery’s T1X platform, the e-SUV offers plenty of interior mobility, meaning front and rear occupants get ample space.

Mounted is a three-spoke flat-bottomed steering wheel, wrapped in upholstery-matching faux leather (blue-beige (two-tone), all-black).

Features are multi-switches (touch-sensor - Bluetooth, Media, Drive Mode), and electric column adjustments (tilt, telescopic).

Drive is aided by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system.

Numerous storage areas. E.g., large-sized door and seat back pockets, centre console partitioned and caverned spaces (armrest storage - cooling function), and a sizable glove box.

Provided are four cup holders (two - front, rear), and four bottle holders (two - front, rear).

Multiple power outlets. E.g., four USB ports (two-front, two-rear), two 12-V sockets (one-front, one-trunk), and one wireless charger (front - 50 W - cooling system, reminder).

Also included is a 3.3-KW Vehicle-To-Load (V2L) function for powering of external devices. 

Accessing its powered-tailgate (handsfree, key fob) opens up to 483-Litres of boot space. Further included is a 1.9-Litre front trunk (frunk).

The all-new Omoda E5 stands at 4,420 MM long, 1,830 MM wide, 1,588 MM tall, and with a wheelbase spanning 2,630 MM.

Angularly-chiselled and -athletic, exuding an overall sporty and modern outlook, it parades Chery’s ‘Electric Motion’ design language.

Aerodynamically-sculpted, the front-end sees a smooth-flowing bonnet, paired to Chery’s ‘X Future Tech’ designed bumper.

Grille-deleted, featured is a charging port (top-centre), a lower stretched-out intake (AGS Active Air Intake System - active shutters), and the Omoda script (black trim).

The coupe-esque rear-end furthers the sportily streamlined appeal, adorned with sharp contours and angled creases.

Featured is a shark fin antenna, roof-edge spoiler, a rakish rear window with blacked-out C-D-pillars, and a pointed tailgate.

Filling-in the layout is the Chery script (centre tailgate), and a full-width symmetrically neat exhaust-deleted black diffuser.

Fiercely-framed at the lower edges of the bumper, the split headlamps are angular-looking, projecting an arrow-esque design. Fitted are full LED units.

Positioned at the top and linked with the grille are the slim and slit-like, axe-shaped LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL). 

Features are sequential LED signal lights, automatic On/Off, manual levelling, automatic high/low beam, cornering lights, and follow-me-home function.

The tail lamps are housed in a full-width strip design (lightbar-style), very thin and angular with a wrapped-around arrow-esque edge.

Installed are full LED units with sequential LED turning lights. Paired to the setup is a spoiler mounted stop light.

Black-capped, the side mirrors are electronically-powered (auto-fold, adjust), with auto-dimming and heating functions, Blind Spot Detection (BSD) indicators, and puddle lamps.

Fitted are ventilated (front) and solid (rear) disc brakes, accompanied by an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold system.

Sportily designed, fitted is a set of 18-Inch enclosed-five-spoke ‘Futuristic’ aluminium rims, wrapped in 215/55 R18 Kumho Ecsta PS71 tyres.

The all-new Omoda E5 features Chery’s ‘L2.5’ suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Grouped are Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Blind-spot Detection (BSD), Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low Speed Follow, Front Collision Warning (FCW) with Vehicle Identification, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Departure Prevention (LDP), Lane Change Assist (LCA), Traffic Jam Assistant (TJA), Integrated Cruise Assist (ICA), Rear Cross Traffic Braking (RCTB), Rear Collision Warning (RCW), Driver Monitoring System (DMS), Door Open Warning (DOW), Multi Collision Brake (MCB), Intelligent Evasion System (IES), and Departure reminder.

Other standard systems include 540-degree HD Panoramic Camera, Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electric Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist System (BAS), Brake Override System (BOS), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Traction Control System (TCS), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), Hill Descent Control (HDC), and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Passive safety, includes six airbags (driver-passenger, front side, front-rear curtain), seatbelts (anchors, reminders, pre-tensioners), ISOFIX, parking sensors (four-front, six-rear), rear-view camera (dynamic guidelines), door ajar warning, Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB), Pocket Brake (panic button - ‘PARK’ button emergency braking), emergency brake signal, auto central locking door, and engine immobiliser with anti-theft.

Three selectable drive modes (Eco, Sport, Normal).

Completing the curved-twin setup, installed is a 12.3-Inch touchscreen infotainment system (8155 Qualcomm Chip). 

The setup supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Intelligent Voice Assistant, navigation, USB and Bluetooth.

Entertainment is piped via an eight-speaker Sony Premium Audio setup.

The all-new Omoda E5 harbours a front-mounted electric motor (3-in-1 flat-wire), generating 150 KW/201 HP of power and 340 NM of torque.

Fitted is a single-speed automatic transmission.

Power is transmitted to the front wheels. Electric Front-Wheel Drive (e-FWD) system.

0 to 100 KM/H is done in 7.6 seconds, and top speed reaches 172 KM/H.

Juicing up the e-motor is a BYD-sourced Blade Battery Technology, featuring a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) blade battery (61 KWH), providing a total driving range of 430 KM (WLTP). 

DC charging (CCS2 - 80 KW), takes 30 minutes for a 30% to 80% State of Charge (SoC). Alternative, AC charging (Type 2 - 9.9 KW).

Also included is a 3.3-KW Vehicle-To-Load (V2L) function for powering of external devices. 

The power consumption reads at 15.5 KWH/100 KM.

The dual-zone air-conditioning system (PM 2.5 air-filter) provides rear air-conditioning vents with a dedicated set of controls. 

Installed is a suspension setup of MacPherson struts (front) and multi-link (rear).

Comfortably spacious, safe and suitable for a daily driver. The ride quality is firm, agile and well-balanced, with a smooth e-powertrain delivery.

Good sound insulation, covering all the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) aspects. Wind noise reads at 62.9 DB at 120 KM/H.

The all-new Chery Omoda E5 is a great compact e-SUV. First, it offers a strikingly edgy exterior appeal, and great interior space.

Second, its shell envelopes a tech-savvy cockpit, featuring a myriad of advanced connectivity, safety systems and creature comfort features.

Overall, its build quality is satisfactory inside and out, and the 2024 Omoda E5 is surely a contender in the e-crossover segment.
