Chery’s footprint in Malaysia is set to grow further as the Chinese automaker deepens its commitment to Selangor.

During a recent visit to Chery International Park in Wuhu, China, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and his delegation saw firsthand the company’s scale of operations, with robotic automation driving much of the production process.

The showcase highlighted Chery’s advanced use of robotics and artificial intelligence, including AiMOGA, its humanoid service robot capable of walking, recognising speech, and conversing in 11 languages.

To date, around 220 AiMOGA units have been deployed worldwide - with two already in Malaysia, a sign of the brand’s readiness to roll out the technology in real-world environments.

At the heart of the visit was a meeting with Chery chairman Yin Tongyue, where discussions centered on the company’s investments in Selangor and the potential for technology transfer.

Chery’s plans include the development of the Chery Smart Auto Industrial Park at Beringin High-Tech Auto Valley in Hulu Selangor, a project valued at over RM2.2 billion. The facility, spanning more than 800,000 square metres, is expected to roll out 100,000 vehicles annually in its first phase, with the potential to triple capacity.

The investment goes beyond manufacturing. Chery aims to establish a complete smart automotive ecosystem in Malaysia, ranging from local supply chain integration to training and vocational programmes that will equip Malaysians with advanced technical skills.

The park is also designed to support a full range of vehicle technologies, including petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery electric models.

Chery’s expansion builds on its existing CKD operations in Kulim and Shah Alam, where it is already working with 12 Chinese suppliers and 23 Malaysian partners.

This partnership model is expected to strengthen local capabilities and open new opportunities for Malaysian SMEs in the automotive sector.

For Selangor, the project promises not only foreign investment but also long-term gains through job creation, technology transfer, and a stronger position in the regional automotive value chain.

The state government has pledged to continue fostering strategic collaborations with Chery and other investors, with the aim of ensuring that these ventures translate into tangible benefits for local communities and the wider economy.
